Giovanni “Gio" Cruz (Resident Advisor)
Housing Happenings: From the Community life to living the "Suite Life", how have you adjust to the change as an RA?
Gio Cruz: he change in going from community style to Living the Suite Life has been great. However they do have their differences, the community style living is a bit more interactive the suites however I love the diversity in my building (Birch) because I have a good mix of first year freshman, upper classmen, and even international/transfer students, whereas in Baker last year, a majority of my resident were first year freshmen. In addition, having my own bathroom and my own living room is a great plus! (LOL)
H.H.: What is your favorite designer that you can't stop wearing and why?
G.C.: Ask anyone who knows me, and they would say I Love Ed Hardy, which is true. I am a big fan of wearing “art” on my clothes. So all of my shirts especially have some type of art or design on them. I don’t like wearing plane t-shirts. Another designer I really like is Marc Ecko, which incorporates a lot of urban art which really inspires me.
H.H.: So rumor has it that your an artist. What do you draw?
G.C.: I wouldn’t consider myself a full on artist because I think there are a lot of “real artist’s” out there that are a lot more experience then I am, but yes I do have some skill myself. Like I said before, I am inspired by urban art, and I can say with confidence that I can draw a majority of anything that people ask me to draw for them. I have drawn things from cartoon characters to real life portrait drawing. Drawing is also a really good stress reliever for me. So I love to just put on my music, shut the world off for a little bit, and just draw.
H.H.: What are your career goals?
G.C.: My career goals include: getting my Bachelors of Science degree in Pre-Vet/Animal Science here at Fresno State, go to a Veterinarian Graduate School, graduate there and become a certified Veterinarian and maybe even have my own clinic someday.
H.H.: If you could be a ice cream favor what would you be and why?
G.C.: I am not that big of a fan of crazy exotic ice cream flavors. So I would probably like to be my favorite ice cream flavor, which is, cookies and cream.
H.H.: How did you get your name?
G.C.: My father grew up in East Los Angeles and had a best friend named Giovanni, who unfortunately passed away at a young age, but my father always looked up to him. So my father knew that when he had a son of his owned, he would name him Giovanni in honor of his friend. In addition, my mother always liked the name Giovanni, so it was a mutual agreement.
H.H.: What is one word that your friends describe you as?
G.C.: That is a hard question because I think there are a lot of words that my friends would use to describe me. Including: outgoing, funny, intelligent, responsible, organized, and a lot more that I can’t even think of, but I also think that one word that all of my friends would use is loyal. My friendships are really important to me and all of my friends know that they can come to me whenever they are having a problem, need a favor, or just want to hang out and have a good time.
H.H.: Do you have any programs coming up? If so tell us.
G.C.: Yes I do, I have one social, and one educational program coming up this month. My education program is called “Let’s talk about Sex,” which is going to be on Wednesday October 21st at 7:30pm in the atrium, and my social program is the woman’s volleyball game vs. Hawaii on Thursday October 29th and I will have everyone who would like to go meet at the birch smoking tables at 7:30pm and we can all walk to the Savemart Center together.

Ohio Woman Guilty of $800,000 Cancer Scam
A woman from Delaware, Ohio was sentenced to eight years in prison for one count of theft after she pleaded guilty to scamming and defrauding friends, family members and the community of US$800,000 by saying her husband was dying of cancer.
Melanie Chen admitted in court that she had asked friends, family, and the community for money to help pay for her husband's medical bills that did not exist. Chen wished she could apologize to all of the victims and knows the impact of her actions.
She was ordered to pay over $790,000 for restitution. Chen was arrested in Utah this past April after leaving Ohio to avoid the charges. Her husband, Phylip, has agreed to take a polygraph test; if he passes it, his charge will be dropped.

Siberian Tiger Mauls Man Who Broke Into Calgary Zoo
Two 27-year-old men broke into the Calgary Zoo early Monday morning by climbing the 8-foot-fence that surrounds the zoo. The men proceeded to climb over the safety fence and into the tiger cage.
When they made it between the safety fence and the actual cage fence, they startled the cage's resident, a 2-year-old Siberian Tiger named Vitali, normally a docile beast. Vitali did what instinct told him to do, and grabbed one of the men.
"My guess would be that the gentleman was hooked by a claw and the arm dragged in and then continued to be attacked from that point," said Dr. Sandie Black, the zoo's head veterinarian. The man who was struck had no life-threatening injuries.
