×   UC’s Sustainable Living Tip #2: Incandescent light bulbs can be traded in for TH40 energy efficient Light Bulbs.

New Furniture at University Courtyard!

As you should have noticed by now, we’ve got new common area furniture in the Hall Lobbies and Atrium. Please be respectful of the new furniture and treat it as if it was your own. Enjoy!

ATTENTION FEMALES:

Please do not flush ANY female products down the toilet – all products must be            disposed of in the trash. Failure to do so will cause your toilet to clog. Be respectful of your suite-mates and hall-mates and following our rules.

Food = Unwanted Furry Friends

To prevent mice from moving in, it’s important that you dispose of all left over    food and keep all uneaten food sealed and put away. Though we take measures in keeping rodents out of Courtyard, all residents must help with the prevention.

Four Ways To Stay Health During Flu Season:

     1.   Wash your hands
     2.   Sneeze into a Kleenex or into the cuff of your arm
     3.   If you are sick, isolate yourself from others yourself
     4.   Get flu vaccine

RLS Corner

Lauren Lieder (Assistant Resident Director)

Housing Happenings: What does UC BEST stands for?
Lauren Lieder: UC BEST stands for University Courtyard Bulldog Energy Sustainability Team.

H.H.:
What is sustainability?
L.L.: The dictionary definition for sustainability is “of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged.” For us, this means choosing lifestyle habits that involve sustainable and eco-friendly methods.

H.H.: When does UC BEST have there meetings?
L.L.: Every other Wednesday at 4:00pm either at the Henry Madden Library or University Courtyard’s Atrium Patio. Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 30th.

H.H.: What kind of projects do you guys work on?
L.L.: Our purpose as a committee is to encourage sustainability on campus, particularly within the residence halls through education, publicity, program planning, and networking with other organizations and individuals that share our vision for developing a more environmentally conscious community.

H.H.: How do students get involved with UC BEST?
L.L.: Students can get involved by attending our meetings, helping with event planning, joining us in our recycling campaign, or by making other lifestyle choices to help us save electricity, water, and other natural resources here at University Courtyard. Involvement can be as simple as reading the sustainability tips provided in Housing Happenings green issues and actively seeking to be more conscious about our own actions.

H.H.: Do you guys work with the University about going green?
L.L.: Yes, we are always looking to network with other organizations across campus and within the community. We are currently making plans for Campus Sustainability Day with students and faculty members throughout campus.

H.H.: How many members do you have on your committee?
L.L.: We are just getting started and currently have 10-12 members attending our meetings as well as many others who have signed up on our emailing list.

H.H.: Why should residents and people (in general) take Sustainability Measures?
L.L.: Living a more sustainable lifestyle is not just good for the environment, it has many personal benefits too! When you make choices that save resources you will often save money. Additionally, products that are harmful for the environment also prove to be harmful for our bodies. Choosing to eat organic, local grown foods or buy natural cleaning products and beauty/hygiene products can reduce the amount of toxins we expose ourselves too. We may not be able to change everything, but making small changes can amount to a lot.

Man Files $17,840,000,000,000,200,164,000 Lawsuit Against Bank of America

New York: Dalton Chiscolm has filed a $1,784 billion, trillion plus $200,1640,000 lawsuit against the Bank of America. US District Judge Denny Chin was unable to make sense of lawsuit and demanded clarification from Chiscolm by October 23.

Even if the unlikely lawsuit were to succeed Chiscolm won't collect what he demands. The sum he is asking for is billions of times larger than the entire world's GDP for last year which stood at a mere $60 trillion.

"These are the kind of numbers you deal with only on a cosmic scale. If he thinks Bank of America has branches on every planet in the cosmos, then it might start to make some sense," said Professor Sylvain Cappell from New York University.

Couple Indicted For Bragging About Shoplifting On Dr. Phil Show

"In the hall of fame of dumb crooks, these people will have a prominent position." That's what Paul Pfingst, a defense attorney, had to say about Matthew and Laura Eaton, the couple that went on the Dr. Phil show to confess to shoplifting.

The couple traveled across several states and would shoplift goods with their three children and then sell them via eBay. The ongoing heist netted the couple as much as $1 million over seven years.

The Eaton's say they are kleptomaniacs, but Dr. Phil, who has a doctorate in clinical psychology, says that they are not because true kleptomaniacs steal for thrill, whereas this couple stole for profit.
