Tip of the Week: Go Green While Saving The Green

  1. Replace an old computer, monitor, and printer with new Energy Star ones.
  2. Replace an old TV with a new Energy Star one.
  3. Use a washable mug for your morning coffee instead of a Styrofoam cup (assuming you can get a freebie coffee mug).
  4. Get a reusable water bottle instead of disposables (again, assuming you can get a freebie water bottle).
  5. Buy products in the largest size you can use to avoid excess packaging.
  6. Use washable plates and utensils for takeout dinners and parties instead of paper and plastic goods.
  7. Buy vintage clothes instead of new stuff at the mall.
  8. Change your car’s air filter and check it monthly.
  9. Turn off the car instead of idling.
  10. Take shorter showers.

STOP! Think Before you Trash

We’re all guilty of it. We all throw out things that we shouldn’t. Instead of recycling that empty water bottle, we throw it in the trash because it’s more convenient. The truth is there are some household items we throw away that can live a second life.

Of course, there are the staples like reusing old coffee cans, shoe boxes, and glass jars but do you know what else you can do with other items? Did you know that you can use old coffee grounds as fertilizer? Did you know that scraps of fabric could be used as reusable fabric softener?

Get creative with old items before you throw them out. Here are a few websites to give you some ideas:

http://www.recycling-guide.org.uk/reuse.html

Since 2008 University Courtyard has made major headway in “going green”. In each Going Green issue of Housing Happenings, we will highlight one of our sustainable living tips so that together we can build a more eco-friendly community.

News Around the World

Pet Shop Owner Given Fine, Curfew, and Ankle Monitor for Selling Goldfish to 14-Year-Old

UK: 66-year-old Joan Higgins has been ordered to pay a fine of $1,506 and has been given a curfew and an ankle monitor after she fell afoul of a law passed four years ago making 16 the minimum age at which a live fish can be legally purchased.

She and her son Mark were picked up as part of a police sting. Mark was given 120 hours of community service and a $1,300 fine. He claims that the boy looked "much older than 14."

"I think it´s a farce. What gets me so cross is that they put my mum on a tag - she´s nearly 70, for goodness sake... You would think they have better things to do with their time and money," said Mark.

Don´t Tailgate Me! Man Adds Rear-Facing Flamethrower to Moped - PT IPT I

UK: After being tailgated too often on his scooter 30-year-old plumber Colin Furze has added a home-designed flamethrower to the back of his sports scooter. His newly-armed vehicle isn´t street legal.

His first prototype couldn´t be fired while the moped was in motion, his second kept igniting itself, and the third was a success, although Furze admits that it can still be unpleasant for the rider if the wind is blowing from the wrong direction.

"The flames are... up to 15 feet long, so you could definitely set fire to someone´s car if you wanted to. I´ve been told that if I fire the flames on the road it´s equivalent to using a firearm and I could be in a lot of trouble," he said.

LMan Arrested for Riding Flame-Throwing Scooter - PT II

Police arrested him for possessing an object converted into a firearm but released him until further investigation is carried out.

It is unclear if he will be charged, but if he is he may face a potentially significant prison sentence.
