News Around the World

Man Kills Himself With Fire; Officer Uses Tank of Pepper Spray by Accident

An Oregon police officer responding to a man who set himself ablaze accidentally doused him with a tank of pepper spray meant for riot control. It was mistaken for the fire extinguisher, which is also red, in the patrol car´s trunk.

A Portland Fire Bureau spokesman said the fact that it was water-based pepper spray and not oil-based "didn´t have any additional reaction with him already being on fire." The man, Daniel Shaull, 26, from Dodge City, Kansas, was a street person.

Shaull, who had only been in Portland for five days, was mentally ill and left in a suicidal state. "I had a feeling something was going to tragically happen," said his Warren, his father. He died later in the day at a hospital.

New Robot Maid Can Clean House -- See famous dance here

South Korea: In a major evolution from their robot that famously danced on YouTube, Mahru has unveiled a robot that can tackle the housework. The robotic maid is still some ways off from commercial production.

With 3-D vision the robot can put the clothes on to wash, operate the microwave, and recognise objects, from cups to sandwiches to people. The robot also has applications in situations where using human workers is too hazardous.

"The most distinctive strength of Mahru-Z is its visual ability to observe objects, recognise the tasks needed to be completed, and execute them," said You Bum-Jae, who heads the cognitive robot centre.

Prank: Airport Worker Plants Bag of White Powder in Passenger´s Bag, Then Confronts Them Over It

Philadelphia: An airport worker has lost his job after planting a bag of white powder in 22-year-old Rebecca Solomon´s laptop bag and then confronting her over it. He eventually told her the bag actually belonged to him.

"He let me stutter through an explanation for the longest minute of my life. Tears streamed down my face as I pleaded with him to understand that I´d never seen this baggie before," said the young university student.

After a formal complaint was filed by Solomon, disciplinary action was taken. According to Suzanne Trevino, spokesperson for the TSA, the "prank" was "highly inappropriate and unprofessional."

Recipe Ideas

Crispy Smoked Mozzarella with Honey and Figs

Ingredients:

     ×   6 sheets phyllo dough
×   6 ounces smoked mozzarella, cut into 6 equal pieces
     ×   Vegetable oil, for frying
×   8 ounces dried figs, stemmed and quartered
×   3/4 cup honey, plus more for drizzling
×   3 teaspoons black sesame seeds

Directions:

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat to 350 degrees F.
  2. Place 1 sheet of phyllo on a dry work surface. Place one slice of cheese about 5 inches from the top of the narrow end of the sheet. Fold the top of the narrow end over the cheese, leaving 1 inch between the fold and the cheese. Next fold over 1 of the long sides then the other, again leaving 1-inch between the folds and the cheese. Then fold the cheese over, again leaving 1-inch between the fold and the cheese. Continue folding to make a package about 3 1/2 by 4-inches. Continue with the remaining pieces of cheese and phyllo.

  3. Fry the phyllo and cheese packages, 2 or 3 at a time, in the oil until golden, about 2 minutes per side. Drain on a baking sheet lined with paper towels.
  4. Meanwhile, heat the figs and honey in a small saucepan over low heat until the honey is warm. Set aside until the cheese packages have finished frying.
  5. To serve, place 1 cheese package on a plate. Spoon some figs and drizzle some honey over the top of each cheese package. Sprinkle with black sesame seeds and serve immediately.
