News Around the World

Report: Woman Punishes 12-Year-Old for Bad Grade by Making Him Kill His Pet Hamster With a Hammer

Georgia: 38-year-old Lynn Middlebrooks Geter has been arrested and charged with battery, child cruelty and animal cruelty after she allegedly made her 12-year-old son use a hammer to kill his hamster for getting a bad grade at school.

Police were alerted after the child told a teacher what had transpired. Geter remains in police custody and her husband Brad is refusing to comment on the case.

Parked Car Ticketed for Speeding

England: 55-year-old Jeff Buck received two tickets for speeding when a speed camera near his home photographed his car while it was parked in front of his house. Both tickets were successfully challenged and police apologised.

The 55-year-old has no driveway or garage, so he has to park his vehicle on the street. Police say the camera was probably triggered by passing cars, but Buck wants a system put in place to prevent future fines for his parked car.

"I am amused by it, but also angry that I have to go to the trouble of contacting the police. It´s amazing that whatever system is in place cannot tell the difference between a car that is motionless and one traveling at 37 mph," said Buck.

Dumb and Dumber Go to Best Buy

ETwo not-so-bright burglars have been apprehended at a Best Buy store in Chattanooga, TN, after they took three laptops to the Geek Squad to have their passwords changed. The employee recognized the username of ´Normal Park´ on the laptop right away.

His sister just happens to teach at Normal Park elementary school, where the laptop was stolen. Justin Hill, 26, and Ivan Hill, 19, (unrelated) both face charges in the theft. Normal Park Museum Magnet´s principal, Jill Levine, was grateful.

"Sometimes everyday people become heroes, and this Geek Squad guy had the courage to keep (the two suspects at Best Buy) and call the police," she said. "Not everyone does that," said Levine.

Recipe Ideas

Homemade Soft Pretzels

Ingredients:

     ×   1 1/2 cups warm (110 to 115 degrees F) water
     ×   1 tablespoon sugar
     ×   2 teaspoons kosher salt
×   1 package active dry yeast
     ×   22 ounces all-purpose flour, approximately 4 1/2 cups
×   2 ounces unsalted butter, melted
     ×   Vegetable oil, for pan
     ×   10 cups water
     ×   2/3 cup baking soda
×   1 large egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water
     ×   Pretzel salt

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375°F. Spray large cookie sheet with cooking spray. In small bowl, mix mustard and apricot preserves; set aside.
  2. Unroll dough on work surface; press into 12x8-inch rectangle. Cut crosswise into 16 (8-inch) strips; roll each into 11-inch rope. To shape pretzel, shape rope into a circle, overlapping dough about 2 inches from each end, leaving ends free. Take 1 end in each hand; twist once at point where dough overlaps. Lift ends over opposite side of circle. Brush each with melted butter. Sprinkle with salt. Place on cookie sheet.

  3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm with mustard mixture.
