Tip of the Week: Save The Planet While Earning Money

As a college student we buy snacks for our midnight munches such as candy, cookies, soda and bottled water. But wait— what do you do with your cans and bottles after you are done with them? I used to throw my bottles in the trash can not realizing that on the label that we can recycle. Sometimes we have such busy lives that the first thoughts on our minds are not recycling. What if I told you that you can earn money while recycling your cans and bottles? So by recycling not only are you saving the planet and reducing the amount of bottles and cans in a land field, you are earning money for those concert tickets or those video games for your game system. For a college student this is one way to earn money while saving the planet in the process.

  • Since 2008 University Courtyard has made major headway in “going green”. In each Going Green issue of Housing Happenings, we will highlight one of our sustainable living tips so that together we can build a more eco-friendly community.
  • UC’s Sustainable Living Tip #4: Compost out at the farm for all biodegradable materials (that’s where all the plate scrapings go)

Lindsey Graham (Resident  Advisor)

Housing Happenings: What was the last movie you've seen in theaters?
Lindsey Graham: The last time I went to theaters I was in high school, so I don’t remember.

H.H.: What are you doing for the Thanksgiving Holiday?
L.G.: I am visiting my father’s first family.

H.H.:
What is your major and why did you choose it?
L.G.: Nursing, actually pre-nursing right now. I had an internship at a non-ambulatory surgery center in high school and I thought that I would enjoy my career in the health care profession more if I were a nurse rather than a doctor. As a doctor, you end up doing the same thing everyday opposed to a nurse who can choose how much variety they want.

H.H.:
Which book series do you like more and why: Harry Potter or Twilight?
L.G.: Unfortunately I didn’t read either of them. Nonfiction is not my thing. School is more important such as testing, applying for scholarships, taking online classes, winter session or summer school. Understanding how to get in to your major and to graduate on time has always been more important to me. If anyone is interested in being successful in school, they are more than welcome to join in on an academic success committee meeting on every other Wednesday from 4-6 in Baker.

H.H.:
What age do you want to get married and why?
L.G.: Age is just a number. Timing is more important. When I am self-sufficient, with a job, a masters in anesthesiology, and can support myself, then I will consider it; but the more you rush on anything, the more likely you are for mistakes. You need to find yourself before you find someone else.

H.H.:
Do you prefer texting or talking on the phone? why?
L.G.: Talking, before long it is going to be taken for granted. Plus it takes forever going back and forth texting when it would be so much easier to just call the person directly.

H.H.:
For Christmas do you buy or make your family's gifts?
L.G.: I try to make them, especially for intermediate family.

H.H.:
If you were on a game show what would be and why?
L.G.: Jeopardy, my teachers used to have me play the rest of the class.

News Around the World

10-Year-Old Girl Tased

According to a report filed by officer Dustin Bradshaw of the Ozark Police Department, the officer was forced to use a "very, very brief" stun with a Taser to subdue a combative 10-year-old girl.

In the police report, Officer Bradshaw was called to the girl's home when her mother called the police. The girl was refusing to follow her mother's instructions, and when officer Bradshaw arrived, he found the girl screaming and crying on the floor.

The mother asked Bradshaw to take the girl to jail, but the girl violently kicked at Bradshaw and planted one in his groin. At that point he used his Taser to put the girl in handcuffs. The Western Arkansas Youth Shelter in Cecil has taken her.

Baby Born in Car, Parents Name Baby After the Car

England: After not quite reaching the hospital in time and having to give birth in their Kia Carens, 23-year-old Samantha Smyth and 24-year-old Tony Richardson have made a list minute change to their baby name.

The infant was originally to have been 'Tilly' but the parents decided that the name didn't fit and instead named her 'Kia' after the car. Smyth said they probably wouldn't have named her after the car if it had been a Citroen or a Volkswagen.

"Ninja" Impales Self on Fence

A Seattle man, whose name has not been released, claiming to be a ninja, attempted to jump over a 4- to 5-foot-high metal fence, but didn't quite make it. Police say that alcohol likely played a role in the "overconfidence in his abilities".

Police were in the area looking for an assault victim when they heard the screams from the man, and suspect he was involved in the assault, even though he claims he was just trying to leap over the fence.

The man is still in intensive care in hospital in serious condition.
